I'm not sure if I understand you, do you propose to add rivers connecting the Lake Nicaragua with both Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea as 2 new sea zones?

I don't know which would be the simplest way to add them, but your idea seems quite good.

PS: I have another idea: You can simply add two rivers to the Lake Nicaragua province and connect this Lake with both the Pacific and the Atlantic. Then, we will have only one sea province, like Panama.

So then the only one graphical change would be add short river between Lake Nicaragua and Pacific Ocean (there are already the other river) and add canal 2 connections (Pacific Ocean - Lake Nicaragua and Lake Nicaragua - Caribbean Sea) in adj_defs.csv file. I've never added any canal connections, I'll test it and see if it works.

After Action Report (AAR? ):

1. After adding 2 lines for Nicaragua Canal:
Code: Select all
4258;3012;Canal;539;Nicaragua Canal
3012;4236;Canal;4291;Nicaragua Canal

2. Effect was:

3. You can go directly from Pacific Ocean to Caribbean Sea, but you can't access Lake Nicaragua as I thought it would work. Maybe because it's a lake not a sea, I'll see if after changing its area to something else it will work.

Note, we can't make it work the same as Panama, Gibraltar or Bosphorus canals as all of them are hard coded to work in that way.

Tested with simplier solution. I've just added line:
Code: Select all
4258;4236;Canal;3012;Nicaragua Canal

Where:
- 4258 is Pacific Ocean
- 4236 is Caribbean Sea
- 3012 is Lake Nicaragua
Adding that like in adj_defs.csv file will result in having that canal from start of scenario and this probably couldn't be added or removed by event or decision like in Victoria. As far I remember (and Martin said) there are a command to change province terrain in game by event, but I don't know how to use it. If it would work then after adding those 2 rivers as separate 2 provinces (land provinces at scenario start) we could make an event which would change them to sea zones and then in result we would have simple sea connection from Pacific Ocean to Caribbean Sea (Pacific Ocean --> river --> Nicaragua Canal --> river --> Caribbean Sea). I hope it wouldn't need distances recalculation, if yes, it may be a problem then.

Fuck. I thought the canal mechanics weren't hardcoded. Yes, we need a mechanism to make the canal land convertible in canal. Even that is not the best solution, but is better than nothing.

EDIT: BTW, I finished Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú and Uruguay.

What about giving the province that controls the canal to rebels (as it is for Panama Canal in 1914mod)? This would block the canal.

It could work. I could add 1 small province in Nicaragua then code would be:
Code: Select all
4258;4236;Canal;NEW_PROVINCE_ID;Nicaragua Canal
That province would be under control of rebels at start of scenario and Nicaragua could annex that province by event. Melkor you're probably a genius.

But you just said that the canal mechanic was hardcoded and you can't make "canal provinces" like Gibraltar, Panamá, Suez and Istanbul.

There are 2 categories of canals in DH. Gibraltar, Panamá, Suez and Istanbul are hardcoded, we can't remove them from game as they aren't included in adj_defs.csv like for example Kiel canal in HoI2 map. In hardcoded type you can't even access concrete sea-zone (it's inactive for you) if you are in a war with that country which control concrete land province. With Kiel canal, you can't go from first sea-zone to the second sea-zone on the other side of canal, but you can access both sea-zones.

Then I think all is clear. :)
