Crete by kujiro: (we have to credit him)

Code: Select all
The island of Crete has been the major battle ground of the Fifth Ottoman–Venetian War, which was also known as the Cretan War taking place from 1645 to 1669 and ended in Ottoman victory. The result was the permanent annexation of Crete by the Ottomans. The island’s population was mostly Greek-speaking and Christian and rebelled several times against the Sultan’s rule but was brutally subdued. In 1878 the Pact of Halepa was signed according to which the island became an autonomous state under Ottoman suzerainty. In 1889 however the Ottomans reneged on the agreement leading to another rebellion which covered most of the island. Strong nationalist sentiment forced Greece to send troops which provoked war with the Ottoman Empire. Hostilities ended after an intervention of the Great Powers who forced the Greeks to withdraw and in November 1898 the island was detached from the Ottoman Empire and the Cretan state was established with Prince George of Greece becoming its first High Commissioner. However pro-Greek sentiment remained strong and the struggle of the ordinary Cretans continued, culminating in the Therisos Revolt of 1905. Now, many demand that the domestic turmoil in the Ottoman Empire be used for the much desired unification with Greece.
